GAS1 — Candida albicans

Summary

Candida albicans GAS1 (also known as PHR1) encodes a glucanosyltransferase with 1,3-beta-glucanosyltransferase activity, belonging to the glycoside hydrolase superfamily and containing an X8 domain. The gene is associated with fungal-type cell wall assembly and 1,3-beta-glucan metabolism, as well as cellular responses to pH, calcium ions, and host environments. GAS1 is associated with biofilm formation in or on the host organism, cell-substrate adhesion, and development of the symbiont in the host. The encoded protein localizes to sites of polarized growth, including the cell septum edging, cellular bud membrane and scar, new and old growing cell tips, and lipid rafts. Associations with alkaline pH resistance, filamentous growth, mating response, and chronological lifespan have been observed, along with links to candidiasis and studies in Mus musculus.
